Afreximbank Launches $1B Africa Film Fund

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), through its development impact investment arm, the Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA), has announced the launch of the Africa Film Fund—a landmark $1 billion initiative aimed at transforming the continent's film and creative industries.
Unveiled during the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) event in Kigali, Rwanda, the Fund is designed to address critical challenges facing African filmmakers, including limited access to financing, production facilities, and distribution networks. By providing capital for production, post-production, and distribution, the Fund seeks to enable African storytellers to create high-quality content that resonates globally.
Professor Benedict Oramah, President of Afreximbank and Chairman of the Boards of Directors of both Afreximbank and FEDA, emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative: "Film is a cornerstone of the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme, and the establishment of the Africa Film Fund is timely as it will help accelerate the growth of Africa’s creative sector, which has witnessed rapid growth but continues to face significant challenges including funding, scaling, and accessing global markets."
Marlene Ngoyi, CEO of FEDA, highlighted the broader vision of the Fund: "The Africa Film Fund is not merely about financing films—it is about building a thriving ecosystem that empowers Global Africa’s creative talent, fosters cultural exchange, and catalyzes economic transformation. At FEDA, we are committed to ensuring this initiative delivers tangible impact with long-term and sustainable benefits."
The African film and audiovisual industry currently generates approximately $5 billion in annual revenues and employs over 5 million people across the continent. However, the sector faces systemic barriers, including underinvestment in infrastructure and limited access to global markets.
The Africa Film Fund builds upon Afreximbank's existing initiatives under the CANEX programme, such as the CANEX Shorts Awards and CANEX WKND, aiming to celebrate and amplify a diverse range of African voices and experiences. By mobilizing resources and attracting patient capital, the Fund aspires to unlock the full potential of Africa's creative economy and position the continent as a significant player in the global film industry.
