In a groundbreaking move that promises to reshape the African music landscape, global music authority Billboard has announced the launch of Billboard Africa, a new regional platform dedicated entirely to spotlighting the sounds, artists, and stories of Africa.
The announcement was made at the Billboard Presents: The Global Power Players 2025 event in Shoreditch, London, where Billboard’s Editorial Director, Hannah Karp, revealed the expansion as part of the brand’s global strategy to amplify music cultures from every corner of the world.
> “African music is not only dominating global playlists, but it’s also shaping the future of sound,” said Karp. “Billboard Africa will provide a centralized space for authentic storytelling, accurate music data, and powerful recognition of talent across the continent.”
What to Expect from Billboard Africa
Billboard Africa will serve as the go-to source for:
Weekly music charts powered by real-time data from streaming platforms like Boomplay, Spotify, Apple Music, and Audiomack.
Exclusive interviews, news features, opinion pieces, and editorial content on the biggest African artists and rising stars.
Live event coverage, festival reports, and video content.
Coverage of major genres including Afrobeats, Amapiano, Hiplife, Bongo Flava, Drill, and more.
Leading the new venture is Nkosiyati “Yati” Khumalo, former Head of Editorial for Apple Music Sub-Saharan Africa and former Editor-in-Chief of GQ South Africa. With over 15 years of experience in media and music content, Khumalo brings deep cultural insight to Billboard’s latest global endeavor.
Powered by Global Partnership
The project is backed by Global Venture Partners, a Dubai-based investment company committed to supporting Africa’s creative economy. CEO Brandon Martin emphasized that the goal is not just visibility—but sustainability.
> “African music deserves infrastructure, investment, and long-term global support. Billboard Africa is a historic leap in that direction.”
A Win for the Culture
The platform, expected to go fully live by the end of 2025, will begin with music charts focused on Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa—four of the continent’s biggest music powerhouses. The launch is being celebrated by artists, labels, fans, and entertainment stakeholders across Africa and the diaspora.
For years, African creatives have been calling for proper recognition and structured music tracking on a global scale. Billboard Africa answers that call—and sets the tone for the continent’s next chapter in entertainment history.
