A powerful new chapter in African storytelling is about to unfold. Netflix has officially announced the upcoming release of “Legends of the Continent”, a bold and visually stunning original series created by African writers, directors, and producers from across the continent.
Set to premiere in late 2025, Legends of the Continent blends mythology, history, and fantasy, bringing to life stories inspired by African folklore and ancient kingdoms. From the Ashanti Empire to the Zulu warriors, the series will explore tales passed down through generations — reimagined for a global audience.
The series is being shot in multiple countries including Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Ethiopia, and Kenya, and will feature a star-studded African cast, alongside fresh talent breaking onto the scene.
Award-winning Ghanaian director Ama K. Abebrese, Nigerian screenwriter Dimeji Ajibola, and South African cinematographer Kagiso Lediga are just a few of the high-profile creatives leading the project. Netflix described the series as a "pan-African epic" designed to showcase the depth, diversity, and magic of African cultures through a modern cinematic lens.
> “This is not just a series; it’s a cultural milestone,” said Tendeka Matatu, Netflix’s Director of Film for Sub-Saharan Africa.“We’re investing in African stories for a global stage, told by Africans, for the world to experience.”

With a reported budget of over $30 million, Legends of the Continent marks one of the largest investments Netflix has made in African original content to date.
Fans can expect:
High-end visual effects and production design
Original soundtracks featuring top African composers
Multilingual dialogue with subtitles in over 15 global languages
A companion docuseries exploring the real myths behind the fiction

Legends of the Continent is expected to redefine how African history and fantasy are portrayed on screen, creating opportunities for African creatives, stylists, costume designers, and musicians to shine on a world stage.
