If you’ve been waiting for Ayra Starr to finally grace NPR’s iconic Tiny Desk, your patience has officially paid off. As part of NPR Music’s 2026 Black Music Month celebrations, the Nigerian Afro-fusion superstar stepped behind the famous Washington, D.C. desk and gave the world a raw, stripped-back performance that will be talked about for a very long time.

For an artist known just as much for her high-fashion, "Fashion Killer" aesthetics as she is for her chart-topping hits, this set was a beautiful curveball. Ayra swapped out the mini-skirts and statement heels for a simple, cozy black sweatsuit. No heavy theatrics, no massive stage setups—just a brilliant live band, two backing vocalists, and her unmistakable voice taking center stage.

A Dream 10 Years in the Making

What made this performance feel even more electric was the pure emotion behind it. During the set, it was revealed that Ayra has been dreaming of performing at Tiny Desk since she was 14 years old. Watching the 24-year-old global phenomenon finally manifest that dream felt like witnessing a full-circle moment in real time.

Backed by an incredibly tight band, her performance showcased a level of discipline and intentionality she credits directly to her Nigerian roots. Every single note counted, and nothing was wasted.

The Setlist: From Global Hits to an Unreleased Surprise

Ayra effortlessly guided the intimate audience through a perfectly paced, multi-genre journey. She kicked things off with “Birds Sing of Money” before sliding into a sultry, high-energy groove with “Gimme Dat” and “Who’s Dat Girl.”

Then came the moment that sent fans into a frenzy. Ayra used the intimate platform to debut “Tornado,” a brand-new, previously unheard track from her highly anticipated upcoming album, Starrgirl. Hearing the live arrangement of the new track ahead of its official release was the ultimate treat for the "Sabi tribe."

Of course, a Tiny Desk set wouldn't be complete without the global anthems that made her a household name. She delivered stunning live versions of “Rush” and “Commas,” breathing entirely new life and jazz-infused textures into the Afro-fusion rhythms we already know and love.

Stripping Away the Popstar Armor

The most powerful part of the afternoon came right at the end. Ayra closed out her set with “Amin” and “Orun,” two deeply spiritual and faith-driven tracks. Stripping away the global popstar armor, she leaned heavily into vulnerability. It was a beautiful, quiet reminder that beneath the streaming numbers, awards, and international buzz, there is a young woman deeply conscious of her journey, her struggles, and the divine grace that brought her to the global stage.

The Verdict

Ayra Starr’s Tiny Desk debut wasn't just a win for her; it's a massive win for the Afrobeats movement. Joining the elite ranks of fellow African giants like Burna Boy, Tems, and Asake who have graced the desk, Ayra proved that she doesn't need giant arena speakers or flashing lights to command a room. Her talent does all the talking.
