Breaking News: Nollywood in Mourning as Alexx Ekubo Passes Away at 40

The Nigerian entertainment industry has been hit with devastating news today, Tuesday, May 12, 2026, as reports confirm the passing of beloved Nollywood actor and model, Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke.

 Alexx, who was just 40 years old, reportedly passed away following a private battle with kidney cancer. The news has sent shockwaves across the continent, leaving fans and colleagues in a state of deep sorrow.

The Passing of a Legend

While the actor had been largely absent from social media since late 2024, many fans held onto hope for his return. Unfortunately, sources indicate he was rushed to the hospital on Monday and passed away on Tuesday afternoon after spending several hours on life support.

Prominent colleagues, including Funke Akindele and Bolanle Ninalowo, have already taken to social media to express their heartbreak. Funke Akindele shared a touching tribute, stating, "I tried to reach out to see you one more time but guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex

Alexx Ekubo was more than just an actor; he was a cultural icon known for his wit, charm, and impeccable style. His journey to stardom began in 2010 when he emerged as the first runner-up in the Mr. Nigeria contest, a platform that launched his prolific career.  

Career Highlights: With over 100 films to his credit, he starred in blockbusters such as Weekend Getaway, The Bling Lagosians, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, and Sugar Rush.

Education: A man of intellect, he studied Law at the University of Calabar and held a diploma in Mass Communication.

Global Recognition: In 2020, he was recognized by the United Nations as one of the "Most Influential People of African Descent Under 40."
