While the rest of the world is busy buying roses and chocolate, Nigerians seem to be reaching for their headphones to process some much deeper emotions.
According to new data released by Spotify, there has been a massive 170% surge in "yearning" and "heartbreak" themed playlists in Nigeria leading up to Valentine’s Day 2026. Forget the sweet serenades; the data proves that for many, this weekend is about reflection, longing, and healing.
The Rise of the "Yearn" Playlist
The surge isn't just a coincidence. Between early January and February 2026, Spotify recorded a steep climb in user-generated playlists titled around "yearning," "breakfast" (the Nigerian slang for heartbreak), and "vulnerability."
Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, noted that:
"Valentine’s Day in Nigeria is no longer a single-note romance moment. We are seeing listeners embrace love and heartbreak as equally valid emotional realities."
Burna Boy: The King of the Weekend Soundtrack
When it comes to the "soundtrack of the brokenhearted," one name stands above the rest: Burna Boy.
The "African Giant" is currently leading the local soundtracks for the Valentine's weekend. His catalog—specifically tracks from Love, Damini and his record-breaking 2025 run—has seen a significant uptick in streams. Hits like "Last Last" remain the ultimate anthem for those "chopping breakfast," while his more reflective tracks are anchoring thousands of new "yearning" playlists across Lagos and Abuja.
Gen Z and Men are Leading the Trend
Interestingly, the data reveals some surprising demographic shifts:
• The Gen Z Factor: Nearly 60% of listeners aged 18–24 are leaning into heartbreak-themed music this week, compared to just 40% focusing on traditional love songs.
• The Gender Gap: Nigerian men are surprisingly leading the charge, accounting for over 65% of heartbreak streams. It appears music has become the primary outlet for the "stern" Nigerian man to navigate his softer, more vulnerable side.
